Symptoms of Peyronie's Disease

  • Painful erections and/or ejaculation
  • Hardened tissue in the penis
  • Curved erections

These symptoms can develop slowly over time or may come on rapidly.

Risk Factors for Peyronie's Disease

  • Connective tissue disorders such as Dupuytren's contracture
  • Injury to the penis
  • Aging
  • Genetics / family history
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking / tobacco use

Diagnosing Peyronie's Disease

A physical examination by an experienced health care provider is generally sufficient to diagnose Peyronie's disease. X-rays or ultrasound pictures are not required, but they can show if calcification has occurred.

Treatment for Peyronie's Disease

A variety of medications, surgery, and stretching devices have been employed in the treatment of Peyronie’s disease. At times, some Peyronie’s plaques may resolve on their own. Other treatment options include oral medications such as Xiaflex®, vitamin E, colchicine, and carnitine; penile injections to insert medications directly into the plaque to dissolve it; and bent penile implant surgery.
